Field Visit #21
Saturday May 28, 2016
I arrived at the park approximately 2:02 PM. The temperature was 90 with a blue sky and high clouds. There was the possibility of rain during the visit. I haven't been to the site in 6 weeks. On the night of my last visit,Sunday April 17, our area received heavy, intense rains up to 16". This caused massive flooding in the area. The site 1B area was flooded for weeks. We continued to have rains off and on for a least another month. It has taken approximately 6 weeks for the waters to lower in my immediate research location. So here are my observations for today with the photos.
#1. The flooded ditch as seen from the trail bridge looking south.
#2. The flooded ditch as seen from near the creek looking back to the north.
#3. I'm on the east, grassy area tromping in mud and water. This was looking into the west woods across the ditch from the east. The water goes way back into the woods.
#4. This is the creek looking to the east. The flowing water was nearly up to the banks on both sides.
#5. This is the creek looking to the to the west. he fast flowing water was up on both banks.
#6. thru #9. The area of old site 1A. Much of it had standing water back in the woods. At this time it looked like a swamp.
#10. This is the high pipe stacked on 2 others. Water was high enough to have gone thru the pipe.
#11. A look at the area around the pipes. The ground of the little trail was very muddy.
I went on into the deeper set-up area.
#12. A blurry photo of my set-up items having been moved by the flooding.
#13. All the buckets have been angled. ????? I don't think it was the flood waters, as the water didn't get this high.
#14. thru #19. All my previous ground set-ups have been moved by the flooding.
#20. To me, the 2 large rocks on the 2 upside-down buckets was surprising. Again, to me, the waters should have moved the buckets and caused the rocks to fall on the ground. ?????
#21. The empty cereal box was hanging from the bucket with part of it trapped by the rock.?????
#22. and #23.-----Food items, I put into small containers for the food bucket.
#24. In the previous bucket photo, the rock is down in the bucket. I moved it up and on the edge for this photo.
#25. I removed the rock and put the food containers in the bucket.
#26. A new set-up of items around the food bucket.
#27. I put the rock back into the bucket in front of and on the food containers.
#28. Another blurry photo of set-up items near the food bucket tree.
#29. and #30. New ground set-ups near the food bucket tree.
#31. and 32. I moved a lot of items into the group of small trees just to the east of the food bucket tree.
#33. A blurry photo of 'Clyde' moved onto one of the ball buckets.
#34. and #35. I saw this on entering the trail earlier. A small tree bent over from the treeline onto the trail. ????
Even after 6 weeks, the areas in and around the reservoir have not receded fully. Also, There has not been a lengthy dry spell. It has been a wet spring. The 'Forest People' have probably moved out to higher ground or may be using the trees to move in, as the area has many high trees above the flooded areas.
This concludes field report #21 for Saturday May 28, 2016.
