Ghosts: The Little Phantoms in the Hospitals

'
I worked in an ER for a few years. I remember hearing some nurses talking to a paramedic. They were discussing the "wee ones." I thought at the time they meant children. Later, however, I heard the discussion continuing as one of them pointed out where she had seen the wee one and what the wee one looked like.

The nurse pointed to a spot between two doors. The doors had no windows. It was between a couple of beds in the row of beds that were curtained in the ER.

I listened as she told the paramedic her encounter.

"Probably 2:30 or 3 in the morning. It was a slow night. I was heading back in from the break room toward the front desk, going through here." She gestured the bed-lined room.

"I got right about there." She pointed to the center of the room. "I saw something out of the corner of my eye and felt a weird shiver. Goosebumps all over." She rubbed her arms recalling it. "It's like I felt someone watching me, but only one bed was taken at the far end." She nodded her head back to the other end of the room.

"When I turned my head to look around, there was this little figure standing there. It's like it saw me seeing it and it turned in profile. It was pure black. No detail at all. Just black human-like shape; head, arms, legs...." She visibly shuddered as if recalling every detail.

"Then, it just turned and walked right into the corner of the wall and it was gone. I looked behind me, thinking maybe somehow it was someone's shadow, but nope. It was 3 feet tall, at the most."

I couldn't make out the paramedic's words, but then the nurse responded to something he said.

"Yes, they moved that patient to CICU, but I don't think he will make it."

Apparently, he asked about the patient that had been in the bed in the room when it happened. I didn't think much of it until I heard two doctors talking about an encounter after they revived a patient after about a half hour of CPR.

"The lil fucker scared me. I'd heard about them. I just never thought I'd have to see one. I can't tell you what it is or where it came from, but I know I felt adrenaline running through me like I had a near miss on the highway. I don't ever wanna see that again!"

Years later when I was teaching a class in ghost investigating at a convention, a student held up a hand. She told of a story of being a hospital, very sick, not sure if she'd make it when a little shadow person came out from between the wall and the bathroom and creeped up to her bed. She sat up, stared at it and rushed off. It happened several times while she was there and being a Native American, she had some strong reactions to this spirit person showing up. She was certain it was going to usher to the other side. Then, one night it didn't show up again and her condition turned for the better. She wasn't sure if it was waiting for her to die or had a hand in her healing, but she was never going to stay in a hospital again, she swore.

Hospice workers are the first to speak of what occurs near death when people, for sometimes up to a few days before their deaths, are visited by their dead loved ones. The terminal patients' reactions are always ones of utter peace and happiness. It is comforting to know we are escorted by familiar faces for such a transition, as we are when we are born onto the earth and our parents hold us and help us adjust.

I am reminded of when I was a child. My family had a summer home on Mobjack Bay in the Southern Chesapeake and we had a dear friend who lived next door that we referred to as "The Captain." He was a captain who had retired. One day, my mom was at home at our main residence in Fairfax, Virginia and she awakened from a nap, feeling someone watching her. She swung her legs over the bed and looked and in a chair that we had brought to our home from our summer place, she saw the Captain.

Only, he wasn't quite right....

He was about 3/4 of his usual size and wearing a white gown. She watched him a moment before he simply disappeared. A half hour later, she got a call from the Captain's wife. He had passed away quite suddenly!

Why is it that the deceased might come back in smaller forms? We know we see apparitions, but so far as I have experienced with many apparitions in my lifetime, they do seem to be a moment in history replaying, not necessarily a spirit, but a glimpse of history. In this case, these might be genuine spirit forms. Spirit forms when able to be visualized may appear proportionally off, but if you are viewing them within their intersecting dimension, they may seem smaller, but it's a visual trick. It's kind of like this picture where I held a toy dino up next to the lens while taking a picture of my friend Julie in the distance.

Now imagine your are glimpsing something in another dimension - what distortion might that do to your visual interpretation?

Here's some videos of folks running into ghosts in hospitals.

Here is one last possibility for the "compressed" and "shadow shapes" - the way we might interpret with our minds another dimensional being wouldn't be as a physical form as we know them, but as a shadow reflection of a form we cannot perceive -
